Why I document my own appliance-buying mistakes
I handle appliance replacement orders for multi-tenant buildings. Since 2019, I have personally made—and documented—eleven significant buying mistakes. Together, they wasted roughly $24,000 of budget. I write these comparisons so the next person can skip the expensive part.
The event that changed my process happened in September 2022. I did not fully understand why a laundry room needed a throughput calculation until I approved a dryer that looked great on paper. The machine worked. It was still the wrong fit for the building.
What I compare now: two complete laundry systems
People ask, Should I choose an LG large capacity washer or a Miele heat pump tumble dryer? I think that misses the question. A washer does not replace a dryer. A facility buyer has to choose between complete packages, and the package needs to fit the way residents actually use it.
The LG-first package I usually spec includes an LG large capacity washer, LG dryers, LG dryer parts availability, and ThinQ monitoring alerts. The premium route I compared uses the same washers but replaces vented dryers with Miele heat pump tumble dryers. That route has higher upfront cost, lower energy use per cycle, no venting, and slower drying output.

If I wrote a one-paragraph Miele heat pump tumble dryer review, I would start with the good news. The machine is impressively built. It is gentler on fabrics, quiet, and the heat pump system, which reuses heat instead of sending it outside, produced real energy savings. In my trial it used roughly 40% less energy per cycle than the LG vented dryer next to it. That measured number is more useful than a marketing claim. I ask every brand for the data sheet behind its efficiency claims. Per FTC guidelines (FTC.gov), those claims should be substantiated. My rule is simpler: show me the test standard.
Here is the part most glowing reviews leave out: that energy savings comes from a longer drying cycle. In my trial, an LG vented dryer finished an average load in about 55 minutes. The Miele heat pump tumble dryer took about 95 minutes for the same load. For one person doing small loads, that is a fair trade. For a building laundry room, it means fewer loads can move through the room in a busy evening. If a resident overloads the dryer to compensate, the cycle gets even longer.
The review point I would add: a Miele heat pump tumble dryer is excellent when drying time is not the bottleneck. In a shared laundry room, drying time is usually the bottleneck.
When I paired it with an LG large capacity washer, the mismatch became obvious. The LG large capacity washer is designed to wash big loads in fewer cycles. But a dryer with an 8 kg drum can only dry so much at a time. A large wash load often needs to be split into two dryer cycles. That doubles the drying bottleneck and turns one appliance upgrade into another laundry room problem.
The concept is simple: a high-volume laundry room needs a dryer with enough drum volume and enough throughput to keep up with peak demand. LG vented dryers in that role are not as gentle as the Miele, and they use more energy per load. But they finish earlier. In a multitenant room, finishing earlier matters.

The second quiet cost is service. Over the past 18 months I have ordered LG dryer parts six times. The longest wait was four days, and most of those parts were already in stock at a local distributor. During the same period, the Miele unit needed one part. It took eleven days and cost about three times what I expected. I still believe Miele components are good quality. But in a laundry room, downtime has a price.
If the Miele route was the right capacity for the building, that wait might be fine. The mistake would be choosing it for a high-volume room and ignoring service lead time until the first breakdown.
The last hidden line: LED smart lighting and a Yale smart lock
My collection of mistakes includes one project where the appliances were fine and the extras broke the budget. The laundry room needed LED smart lighting, meaning motion-activated fixtures that reduce wasted energy, and a Yale smart lock for after-hours vendor access. I treated them as small items after the appliance quote. They were not small.
The LED smart lighting fixture required a compatible hub and careful layout because the laundry room had concrete walls and several metal panels. The Yale smart lock appeared even simpler. I planned to look up how to program a Yale smart lock the week before install. That was wrong. Programming steps depend on the model. Some Yale locks use a master PIN entered on the keypad. Others need the Yale Access app to create an owner account first. If the lock is not put into programming mode in the right order, temporary codes will fail. We paid a technician $235 to fix a mistake that thirty minutes of model-specific research would have avoided.
Neither of those items is LG or Miele. But they show why total project cost, not unit price, should drive the comparison.
Which should you choose?
I cannot give you a brand-only answer because a laundry room has to serve a specific building. The useful answer depends on the building's real load and repair expectations.
- Choose the LG-first package if: the room has high and bursty demand, residents need large loads, repair speed matters, you rely on LG dryer parts availability, and you want ThinQ alerts connected to washers and dryers.
- Choose the Miele heat pump dryer route if: volume is low, venting is impossible, garment care is valuable to your customers, energy use per cycle is a priority, and a longer drying time is acceptable.
People sometimes think the issue is simple: Miele costs more, LG costs less. In my experience, the real difference is capacity and fit. The most expensive option is the one that does not match how the room is actually used.
If I had run that comparison in 2022, I would have installed the LG large capacity washer/dryer system from the start. The Miele unit was not a bad product. It was a bad fit for that room's peak hours, and I paid for the mismatch in overtime labor, extra parts, and resident complaints. At least, that has been my experience in multi-tenant buildings. A single-family home may come to a very different conclusion.
